Celje

Celje is one of the oldest cities in the country and the third largest city in Slovenia.

Celje is located at the confluence of the rivers Savinja, Ložnica and Voglajna, at the foot of the hill on top of which rises the ancient Celje Castle.

The city went down in history as the center of the county of Celje (14./15. centuries) in the Middle Ages, as an independent ethnically Slovenian state.

The emblem of the counts of Celje, an inverted triangle consisting of three golden six-pointed stars, has become one of the elements of the state emblem of modern Slovenia.

Celje has a rich history, evidence of which can be found in the city's monuments and museums.

The City Local History Museum is located in the so-called Old County (XVI century) - the most beautiful building in Celje, built in the spirit of the Renaissance, later rebuilt. Among the oldest buildings is also the Church of St. Daniel (1306).

The constant interest of tourists is attracted by the Capuchin Bridge, the City Hall (1830) and the Capuchin Monastery with the Church of St. Cecilia. The monastery rises on the right bank of the Savinja river.

The modern city is a large industrial center. Its uniqueness lies in the thermal health resorts of Laško and Dobrna (the oldest resort in Slovenia).

The resorts on the outskirts of Celje are famous for their unique thermal springs, which have no equal in Europe.

Outdoor enthusiasts will find a large number of sports facilities in the vicinity of the city, as well as good conditions for fishing.

It is also a land of friendly people, the birthplace of noble wine and the famous Slovenian beer Laško. The secrets of the national traditional cuisine, which are very popular with tourists, are carefully kept here.
